Active Community Walking Programme

The Active Community Walking Programme aims to support the creation of vibrant walking communities throughout Ireland.

The programme works with communities to increase the capacity and potential of people with low levels of physical activity to become more active through walking. This, in turn, will lead to increased numbers of people participating in walking throughout Ireland.

By implementing a locally based and focused programme, and working directly with communities, this initiative seeks to empower local communities to increase their physical activity – through walking.

One of the themes within Get Ireland Walking's Strategy and Action Plan 2017-2020 is communities. All communities are different and different approaches are needed to promote sustained walking behaviour. Programmes need to be adapted and tailored to each setting and population group which is why our key partner in the Active Community Walking Programme are Local Sports Partnerships.

This programme continues to grow and expand and we hope that it will reach 500 communities across Ireland by 2020.

Get Ireland Walking recognises that walking is an activity with a potential risk of personal injury. Participants should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement.
